You Are As Welcome As The Flowers In May!

"You are as welcome as the flowers in May," was a quote first said by Charles Macklin, and it is the perfect quote for our first post for the month of May!

May is known to bring flowers as we transition into springtime and thus, it is only fair that this theme comes about in the jewelry we wear!

There are so many beautiful kinds of flowers that it can be hard to the right flowers for you or a loved one.  Therefore, this week, J Laur Store decided to break down the meaning of different types of flowers for you..

A more popular flower that can be found in jewelry often is the rose - but the colors have different meanings...for example, a pink rose symbolizes friendship, while a red one means love.

April: The Month of Diamonds!

In the world of jewelry, the month of April is known as Diamond month; it is the birthstone for April, but you don't have to be born in April to sport the sparkly jewel..

Diamonds were first discovered about 3,000 years ago in India; they became instantly valuable because of the way in which they were able to refract light.  During the middle ages, the popularity of the Diamond grew exponentially as other sources for Diamonds were discovered in places like Brazil and Australia.

Take A Chance!

Believe it or not, April 23rd is officially 'Take A Chance' Day!  Although it might not be a famous holiday that is widely celebrated, it sets a good tone for how we should approach our daily lives.  If no one ever took a chance, many of the advanced technologies we surround ourselves with today wouldn't even exist!

Taking a chance can be considered risky to some people, but what's important about taking a little risk here and there is that it can be just that; little!  You don't have to skydive or become a lion tamer in order to be a chance-taker...the little things in life can make a great impact as well!  For example, changing up your look or experimenting with jewelry is always fun!

Time To De-Stress!

In honor of it being National Stress Awareness Day, we are going to talk about some retail therapy!

Although it is a commonly used phrase, there is actually no such thing as retail therapy...the term was first coined by the Chicago Tribune in the 1980's around Christmas - due to the bustling shopping season and the fact that many people had taken up on the trend of "shopping their troubles away"!

This is because retail therapy is basically defined as shopping with the primary purpose of improving the buyer's mood and disposition.  What many people don't take into account is the fact that too many retail therapy sessions can send a person into debt, having the opposite effect of the intended purpose!

Spotlight On: The Zodiac!

The division of the ecliptic path of the Sun into twelve equivalent regions first originated with the Babylonians...and the twelve symbols at each section are representative of the constellations seen at these times of the year.  In recent years, the Zodiac has come to symbolize much more than constellations, however.

Kiss Me I'm Irish!

One of my favorite things about March (besides my birthday, of course) is March 17th - St. Patrick's Day!  I'm part Irish, so I especially love this holiday!  And even if you're not Irish, getting all decked out in green and shamrocks and chowing down on some Irish bacon (corned beef) and cabbage is just as fun!

The Irish have celebrated St. Patrick's Day for over 1,000 years, in celebration of, you guessed it, St. Patrick on the anniversary of his death.  St. Patrick was known for bringing Christianity to the Irish.  The story behind the shamrock is that he was Holy Trinity using the leaves of the famous plant - and now, the four-leaf clovers are known for being lucky!

To this day, the holiday is celebrated internationally, boasting the oldest and largest parade in America - held in New York City with over 150,000 participants!  Another famous tradition on this day is the dying of the river that runs through the city of Chicago - they use 40 pounds of dye that keep the river flowing green for several hours!

As we move into March, it is only a short time until Spring makes its appearance...the days are getting longer, the sun brighter, and I hear birds chirping already!

With Spring, comes warmer temps and what better way to welcome the rays then with a warm jewelry palette to accentuate the season's hottest trends?
